Overview
The upcoming fully electric 2025 Ram 1500 REV pickup truck grabs life by the cord instead of the horns. Following the excitement of already available full-size EV pickups such as the Ford F-150 Lightning and Rivian R1T, the REV promises both big range and impressive tow capability. The REV is a battery-powered version of the gas-powered Ram 1500. Like its future EV competitors, the Ram 1500 REV retains a rugged body-on-frame chassis and is pinstriped with enough LED lighting to cover a short runway. While the concept Ram EV was a wildly futuristic truck with several outlandish features, the production version looks similar to the gas-powered version. The REV is being shown initially as a crew-cab model with a short bed. Two battery packs will be offered, the larger good for up to 500 miles of driving according to Ram. The REV will be able to tow as much as 14,000 pounds depending on options. Ram says it will use an 800-volt architecture that allows quick DC fast-charging rates. While the days of the gasoline Ram 1500 aren’t over yet, the EV version is a nod toward the old truck’s eventual replacement.
What’s New for 2025?
The 2025 Ram 1500 EV will be an all-new model and the first Ram pickup truck to be powered exclusively by electricity.
Pricing and Which One to Buy
Ram hasn’t said how much the 2024 Ram 1500 EV will cost, what trim levels will be available, or what equipment will be standard and optional. Based on the F-150 Lightning’s current starting price of roughly $58,000, we’d wager that the electric Ram 1500 will open with a similar starting price. And given the lofty MSRPs of the Lightning’s upper trim levels, the top Ram EV’s will no doubt mirror those as well.
EV Motor, Power, and Performance
Ram will sell the 1500 REV with two different battery packs, each with its own specific advantages. For starters, all-wheel drive is standard with either pack. The model with the 168-kWh battery will be cheaper, tow more, and have 654 horsepower with 620 pound-feet of torque. Specifics on the model with the larger 229.0-kWh battery are still a secret, but we expect less maximum towing capacity due to the increase in curb weight that comes with the larger pack. Ram says acceleration to 60 mph will be around the 4.4-second mark. The Ram 1500 EV will offer four-wheel steering for tighter turning in the outdoors or in parking lots. Like the current truck, it will offer an adjustable air suspension that increases ground clearance for off-road use and lowers the truck to maximize highway efficiency and ease of loading.
More on the 1500 Rev Pickup
Towing and Payload Capacity
Ram says the 1500 REV will have a towing capacity of up to 14,000 pounds and a payload of 2700 pounds. That’s for the smaller battery pack option. Due to an increase in curb weight, we suspect Ram REVs with the larger battery will tow less. Currently, the F-150 Lightning has an official maximum towing capacity of 10,000 pounds.
Range, Charging, and Battery Life
While every Ram 1500 REV comes standard with all-wheel drive, the electric pickup gets two different size batteries. A smaller 168.0-kWh battery should deliver up to 350 miles of range. Ram hopes the larger 229.0-kWh battery will get at least 500 miles of range. The 800-volt architecture in the truck will allow DC fast-charging of up to 350.0 kWh. That’s roughly 100 miles of range for every 10 minutes during optimal charging.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
The gas-powered Ram, for a long time, has offered a luxurious interior with quality materials that outpaces its competitors, and we suspect its shift toward battery dependence won’t change that. Without an engine under the hood and other bulky powertrain components, the fully-electric Ram 1500 promises to offer clever ways to increase storage for cowboys and contractors. The concept features adjustable seating and storage areas that allow objects up to 18 feet long to fit from the bed to the frunk. The powered frunk, side steps, and rear tailgate make the full-size pickup easy to use and get in and out of. A larger Ram Box with a multifunctional tailgate is also shown on the concept and would likely make it on the list of equipment included for the production pickup. The concept’s cab is 4.0 inches longer than the current Ram 1500 crew cab, and a set of jump seats that create a third row are also featured.
The Car and Driver Difference
Infotainment and Connectivity
The Ram 1500 EV concept features two 14.5-inch touchscreens that power all of the interior entertainment. A 360-degree camera with digital side-view mirrors and a head-up display are also shown, with voice assistance from both Android’s Alex and Apple’s Siri. The truck’s infotainment system also features a Smart Home Control function, that will allow passengers to adjust lights, cameras, thermostats, and audio systems at home from the front seat. We expect equipment already found on the gas-powered Ram such as wireless phone charging, wireless Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay to carry over as standard features for the EV truck.
